[Business News with FFXIV mention] Discord (which many of us use) earns "an investment of almost twenty million dollars." The FFXIV Reddit community is explicitly mentioned. :D

You dont seem to understand "open-source" software. Its largely helped developed by the community and usually done as a side-project, or a learning experience or something done in peoples spare time for fun.

They dont expect to be payed, and think NOTHING of the profits (otherwise they wouldnt be open source >.>)

It helps get developed by the community, and also they receive donations from people, which is how the projects stays alive. (if the project is good people will donate to it)

I am not really for closed source software, especially when its something such as this. (i mean creating the adobe suite is something on a whole different level). And imo games are more categorized as "art" then software.

Closed source software doesnt really help humanity at all. by it being open source, people can learn from it, make it better. the same mentality behind closed source software is the same mentality people have against any forms of progress that displace the current "meta".

if innovation wasnt stifled in the name of profits, we would probably already have interstellar travel lmao. its the same thing with software. if all software was open source, do you realize how far we would be ahead?

Now when a "service" is offered for "free", its usually because YOU are the product. and they are selling you. (i dont mind paying for a service with money. i dont like paying with data, especially secretly collected data)

i dont agree with this at all. (its also why i dont like windows, and prefer linux. i only use windows for when i absolutely have to. so they get very little data from me).

i take privacy/security pretty seriously. and everyone should. its very important.

do you realize data collection is what caused the holocaust? yeah... so suppose no one opposed data collection, and every thing about everyone was stored in a database. well now if some crazy and powerful person just decided "everyone liked ffxiv is going to die". gg

this ofcourse is a very extreme example. but theres really no good use for collecting data of any kind, especially without peoples consent or knowledge.

ok lets look at it from another example (more real world practical example), so all this metadata is being collected and sold.

Well the people able to buy this data now have an advantage on what to invest in. they have insider knowledge on what is popular.

If everyone on this voip service was raving about mt.dew, they could go invest in mt dew and makes lots of money.

well thats not right. that someone can use this data unfairly and profit from it, because they were the ones who had this data and no one else did.

Or it can be used by companies who want to know what kinds of products to make and come out with. which you might think, well thats a good thing isnt it? companies can waste less time and resources guessing what people want, because they know what people want?

again, wrong. the problem is again the people who acquire this data have an unfair advantage vs smaller companies who cant get this data.

So if i wanted to start up business and dont have this data, i wouldnt be able to compete with large companies who can buy all this data. this makes for a very anti-competitive market (we are already here, its very bad).

and what about 1 last example. say im on voip, and im talking with my friend i completely trust, or maybe say a family member. and im like "hey i got this great idea. we can make this service that people really want, and do it like this, and it could be very successful"

and well that data was collected and bought, and someone with the nearly infinite resources gets to take that idea, copyright it and execute it.

BUUUUT i digress.

i think discord gets more praise then it deserves. and with how they are funded, im sure there are some special interests in there somewhere.
