is buying this car a dumb idea?

I'm not familiar with your financial situation, so it's hard to give a definite answer. But, I'll give my experience. I didn't really have a choice in car; I got a low-mileage econobox, though I really wanted something faster and sportier. Looking back, owning the reliable, slow car was the best thing, financially, to happen to me in college, and has put me ahead financially years after graduating of where I would have been if I had my choice of car.

So, I guess if you're in the same boat as me, my suggestion would be to hold on to your Honda, and after graduation, get whatever you want & can afford. If you're better off than I was, then maybe you can get the car you want. Ultimately, you know your situation best. If you know what you're getting into and can afford it, go for it. Just don't be over-optimistic about what you can afford! Plan ahead and do the numbers (monthly payment, if financing/leasing, sales tax, increased fuel costs, insurance, maintenance), and be aware of unexpected costs, namely unexpected maintenance.

If it's less about financials than your post makes it out to be, ignore your friends and get whatever the hell you want :)
