Vehicle encampment stretching 2 miles long [on Binford Road on the outskirts of Novato] has come to symbolize Marin’s affordability crisis. One of the last remaining places in the county where people sleeping in their cars won’t get hassled

Two groups:

  • some feel entitled to live in a certain area, even if it means in an RV/car. I recently saw a documentary about a senior citizen living in her car while trying to find housing. She didn't want to go live with her daughter (who was willing to take her) because she basically wanted to stay in the town that she grew up in.
  • no resources to move. They are barely getting by. Make $50, spend $50. No savings, no "emergency fund", no other source of money. If you have $0 it's very difficult to just move to another area. No one will rent to you. And how you going to find job without a local address, local network, etc. Moving is not cheap. They are essentially stuck.

The first group is stupid. But the 2nd group I can see why it's very difficult to move to lower COL area.
