Can any bistitchual knitters explain why I should learn to crochet?

Started out a knitter, learned to crochet about a year ago. I learned for two reasons: I really like textiles, especially the fibre arts, and I did not like the fact that there was a whole craft in my area of interest that I couldn't do. I sew passably well, I do needlepoint and embroidery, I knit, I crochet, I spin, and recently I've been more and more interested in learning to weave. Jack of all yarny trades, that sort of thing. The other reason is because I put myself on a knitting ban in the weeks leading up to my exams ... so I gave in and learned to crochet instead.

Crochet is not my favourite ever craft, but it's probably among the more useful things I know how to do. It's much, much quicker than knitting, the construction of 3D things is a lot more intuitive (I'd never try and freehand a knitted toy, but I freehanded a plushie of something I'd only seen pictures of within two months of learning to crochet, and it was actually recognisable!), and I think it is more suited to big things like blankets because you've only got the one live stitch.

I thought pretty much exactly the same as you when I first started crocheting - "haven't found any patterns I like and anyway knitting looks better so what's the point" - and I still agree when it comes to things like garments and many accessories. However, just because you've not come across interesting and beautiful crochet yet doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Take something like Sophie's Garden; that sort of bright, fun intricacy is really suited to crochet, but I don't think it would work so well knitted. Another example is the difference between crocheted and knitted lace. I love knitted lace, but I also love crocheted lace, and if you told me I had to work a massive lace piece - a bedspread or a wedding dress or something - I'd always choose to crochet it instead of knit it.

Crochet is not suited to every project you might otherwise knit, that is just the fact of the matter. But what it is suited for, it's really, really good for. That's the best thing about being bistitchual, in my opinion - you get to choose which craft is most suitable for what you want to make.
