Why can't swing dancing be more affordable esp to students or low income people who want to get serious and take their love for swing above the hobby/soc dancing level? Seems like only white collar professionals can afford to pay for monthly lessons or annual memberships to studios.

Hi, thanks for your response. I appreciate it even if I disagree with you on some points. I think you hurl a lot of unfounded accusations and assumptions. I haven't shot down a single idea to learn lindy outside of a studio. Actually I have been very open to any suggestions and am looking for creative ways to learn. I don't know where you saw any differently. I also have no issues with the instructors or their rates. And I have no intention of trying to get them to teach for free. I respect their profession and art. I understand their time is money, so I would not ask them to be charitable with it. Because this is a business and they are trying to earn a living for their art form; and I deeply respect that. I also appreciate their contributions to the scene, so I don't know where these accusations of yours are coming from.

I am only referring to the studio's package deals, which are exorbitant and don't seem quite right for Lindy and a lot of people seem to agree with this. 4,000 seems excessive and perhaps my math is wrong but I was not able to justify the pricetag.

I believe the studio I attend is highly profitable and widely popular in and outside of the local dance community. If they were not, they wouldn't be in business for over a decade and winning best dance studio awards in the county year after year. This is the premiere place to learn Lindy. I have confidence in them and I believe that they are a strong and successful business with a large following and firm base to draw from. Because of this, I think they have more room to invest in their dancers as opposed to so many other studios that simply don't have the funds. I think if this studio can afford to offer 1 or 2 or even 3 scholarships, then it would benefit not just the student, but the studio, and the community. These scholarships would be the kind students audition for. They don't just give them away to anyone who asks. It has to be the right person for the studio. The studio is investing in the dancer, so if the dancer places in comps and becomes a well respected member of the community, then that can only mean good things and bring more business to the studio. It adds more legitimacy to the studio as a brand and other students will want to learn from the very same studio that this dancer went to. It would be a new model and could usher in a more altruistic business practice that keeps students and the community in mind while still being a successfully operating business. I think that should be encouraged. And I don't believe 1 or 2 scholarships is going to break the piggy bank. Who knows, it might even help in business taxes at the year's end.

All of your claims just sound angry. They're random assumptions you drew not from my comments but from what you concocted in your head. I don't think any of those terrible things you described. I don't consider it complaining when you point out failing incongruencies within the culture and try to find creative ways to resolve it like when I proposed the idea of scholarships. Also, I have already tried to organize multiple practices and regular meet ups to try out ideas and new patterns but it was unsuccessful many times because I live over an hour away and it did not work out for those people or they weren't available to meet up weekly. I get it people are super busy; there is nothing wrong with that. As for a performance team, I don't consider myself an advance dancer so I don't know how to choreograph sequences for such routines, but would love to get to a level where I could audition for one. However, there is one thing that I don't agree with you on at all. 4,000 is a bourgeoise pricetag that only white collar people can afford. If you want to go broke for your shit then good for you but I don't have that luxury to even go broke.
