In the case of pedophilia in the church, we can talk about two scenarios. The Catholic Church is aware that celibacy causes sexual dysfunction in priests. Homosexual acts, rapes, molestations or abuses occur, even on other priests, but pedophilia also occurs.

On the other hand, there are actually real pedophiles in the church, i.e. disturbed people from the beginning using their trusted position to rape children.

I watched two documentaries about pedophilia. What is interesting is that some priests agreed to meet the victims years later and apologize, they cried and apologized saying, they could not explain what pushed them to do it.

In contrast, others hid or avoided meeting with the victim. Often the attempted contact ended, even with triggers over the phone. Co-workers tried to whitewash or protect such pedophiles, while those fully aware of what had happened still ran away and continued their activities.
