CMV: Gun control in the U.S. is ineffective, overstepping the bounds of reasonable measures, driven by ignorance, and much of it should be repealed.

The problem when comparing countries is there's more than just different laws. You have to take cultural differences, racial and socioeconomic diversity and disparity, as well as population density and wealth into account. For a country the size of the US you have similar problems just comparing two states. There are states where there's a firearm in almost every house and little to no crime at all (let alone gun crime) and then you have states where laws are exceedingly restrictive or a culture of gun ownership doesn't exist and tons of crime.

Australia went through a massive confiscation process to get to where they are. Very few own guns and those that do only have manually operated firearms.

Austria on the other hand has an actual machine gun in almost every house, and also very little gun crime. They benefit by having a homogeneous cultural composition on top of being (even on average) very affluent in comparison to a place like the US.

I think we should be approaching violent crime with the intent to solve it's causes, not just focusing on one aspect of it. It's impossible to prevent 100% of murder or rape or assault because there's always going to be that one asshole in a million people who is wired wrong, but what we can do is start investing in our own society and try and reduce the poverty rate and education deficiencies that we are so well aware of. Decreasing the poverty rate is a huge undertaking but I think if the federal government actually made it a priority it could be done over time. I think a major part of that is improving our educational system. We don't need everyone going to college, but people should have the ability to learn a trade (flipping burgers is not a trade). Decreasing economic disparity helps everyone: the poor can purchase more goods, those selling the goods get more revenue, even the govt gets a bonus from increased taxes.
