CMV: smoking paraphernalia shouldn't have an age restriction when purchasing

Kids die all the time from stupid shit. We can't make the entire world idiot-proof. Of all the things he could have tried, newspaper, office paper, notebook paper, bible paper, he chose a pez dispenser. Do you honestly think that was his only option? Do you have anything that suggests that he didn't have a glass pipe or rolling paper on hand, and was trying to smoke out of a pez dispenser for the hell of it?

While if I had to guess that smoking using notebook paper, newspaper, etc. wouldn't be as bad for your health, those are still not healthy for you because they aren't made to smoke and contain dangerous chemicals. That would probably kill you pretty fast too if you use regularly. I doubt he'd be smoking out of a Pez dispenser for the hell of it, it would probably taste pretty horrible compared to glass.

So, if some kid decides to try to get high on by smoking dishswasher detergent, ends of killing himself, shouldn't we just use the same logic as allowing smoking tobacco?

Laws are in place for a reason. Cigarettes are restricted to 18 and older, smoking paraphenelia for 'cigaretees' should have that same restriction, as they serve no other legal purpose.

I don't quite understand what you mean by the dishwasher detergent analogy.

There are other risks with drug use, like sharing needles, that can spread disease and are much more epidemic and much less obvious than trying smoke drugs out of a plastic toy.

Did you just compare smoking weed or a cig to shooting heroin? I'd say there's quite a large difference. I think it's also important to add that D.A.R.E. doesn't discourage people from never drinking alcohol in their life, and that it's even ok to be a social drinker. Here's a link to what D.A.R.E. has to say about drinking alcohol.

Social drinking is an acceptable and pleasurable activity for millions of Americans. It relaxes you, curbs stress, and chases away inhibitions, but if it becomes a regular mechanism to escape troubles and to feel good, it can be an abuse, a dependency, and a severe problem for millions of Americans.

I don't want to open up another debate, but alcohol is also harmful, and I don't see the difference between a person having the occasional joint or cigar and the occasional drink.

I should have added this to my main post, but it's common for stoners to make bongs out of plastic water bottles, making pipes using a plastic pen casing and a socket wrench as a bowl, (smoke is an abrasive and smoke passing through plastic is also bad for you. Smoking out of a metal socket wrench is also dangerous because the metal obviously isn't made to smoke out of) making a pipe out of a bent soda can with holes in it, etc.

I'll leave it at this. Some kid dies because he didn't smoke out of a proper pipe. We allow children to buy smoking paraphenelia, and thousands of kids that would have been turned away from a tobacco shop can go in and buy with impunity. "I bought the bong because it looks awesome!" "have you tried it?" "No, do you want to?" "yeah!" As a results hundreds of kids start smokng for the opportunity to buy this cool shit.

I'd say that while some kids won't get caught, most kids will slip up at least one time and have their parents catch them. Smoking is a hard habit to cover up. It's extremely smelly. And like I said, with marijuana becoming legal in more and more states, I this might become a more common occurrence. Now that I think about it more, I think the best solution would to just educate children to not smoke out of anything other than glass or paper. However, if D.A.R.E. refuses to change their stance that "smoking anything once is a very bad idea", then allowing children to buy paraphernalia would be the second best option. Remember, kids are still at a disadvantage because they still cannot legally buy weed or tobacco.

I do agree with you though when you say that interesting looking glass could reel in kids. Now that I think about it, I should really create another post that says "I think D.A.R.E. should educate children on the dangers of smoking out of plastic" or something along those lines.
