CMV: The word "retarded" is no worse than stupid, dumb, idiot, moron, etc.

But that is not necessarily true because words can change in meaning over time. So when a society is first established they decide that stupid is wrong but retarded is the correct medical way to refer to a person with cognitive problems.

Then 100 years later it is decided that retarded is an offensive term. People who have been labeled as retarded determine that the word is demeaning.

Well it's already established that retarded is the correct response to a person with cognitive problems. So now the expectation is that an entire population immediately shift to a new definition because it has become offensive to a small number. I believe that is where the issue lies.

I believe the issue is more with how words change over time and in the digital age how that expectation is instantaneous.
