Comey confirmed in Constitution, president has authority to direct FBI to stop investigating anyone. He can decide who to investigate, stop investigating, prosecute, not prosecute. Trump is the head of the unified exec branch of gov, Just Dept/FBI work under him, he may order to do what he wishes

whenever this is discussed it often seems to get overlooked that just because the president can do this, it doesnt mean it is right to do it, or that he is then insulated from any criticism or even impeachemnt for doing so.

my comments have nothing to do with what trump has done here specifically, what will come of that remains to be seen, i think its safe to say at this point that it is virtually impossible that any impeachment hearing will happen over the obstruction issue.

but in general - lets say the president instructs the FBI to begin criminal investigations into several companies that are business rivals of his family, based on flimsy evidence or even just rumor.

upon learning of this would anyone put forth the argument that "oh well, the president can direct the FBI to begin or stop any investigation he wants!"? of course not, the president would be impeached and would be found guilty and removed from office.

so, yes the president has the authority to do this, but as always - the details matter.
