Common Fuck-Ups Megathread - June 12, 2016

TIFU by giving a dude change. TIFU by giving a homeless guy some change. (This one is actually from about 10 years ago) I was helping a friend move, and this dude came up to us, wanting a couple quarters so he could call his PO. He was pretty run down, tattered clothes, and whether he was telling the truth or not, he at least needed a little bit of help. So we all checked pockets, and he probably walked away with only a couple bucks in change. A few minutes later, I see the same guy stumbling out of an alley. He stops, then just drops. He slowly, and while very dazed, stands back up momentarily, only to completely collapse, unconscious. I ran over to the guy, and as I'm dialing 911, I'm doing the move where you firmly rub your knuckles on his chest to get his attention, to wake him up. The dispatcher comes on, and I relay the story. The dispatcher asks me "Do you feel comfortable administering CPR?" I respond, "Honestly, this guy most likely just had a needle in his arm, and I don't feel comfortable doing that." (I had heard of a story a year prior to this incident where a good samaritan witness a stranger collapse in a parking lot and started giving them CPR. Unfortunately, the stranger had open sores in his mouth and the good samaritan had a mouth-to-mouth blood transfer. When the paramedics arrived, they saw the needle still stuck in his arm, and ran his blood work at the hospital. The good samaritan would later get HIV from this person. The story always stuck with me, and I always carry around a mouth guard protector now in my first aid kit.) Dispatcher was sending the ambulance, so as I hung up, I was still trying to get the guy awake. He had a pulse, but breathing was erratic. Medics showed up just a couple minutes later, and as they put him in the back of the ambulance trying to revive him. I stood and watched for a few minutes, then saw one of the paramedics give a look, shrug his shoulders, then close the door to the ambulance. They left, without lights and siren. To this day, I won't give change on the street, because apparently you can still get a really shitty dose of H, or whatever you need, for only a couple bucks...in change. I will however give food, and the other day, bought a homeless man a nice lunch, who I see in downtown Chicago (Kinzie and Clark) almost everyday. TL:DR - Today I fucked up by giving a homeless guy some change, which he then bought heroin with and died in front of me. Edit 1 - This story took place in Denver, CO in Cap Hill neighborhood.
