I could be homeless within a months time, what do I do?

Yep.

These people have no idea what they are talking about.

Six months from first enquiry to first day at recruit training is considered fast. I was lucky, I got through in about 4 months and it's rare I meet anyone who went through the system quicker. It's not unusual for the process to take longer than a year - especially if you get stung with having to get medical clearance about previous medical issues.

The Navy and Air Force are pretty much full at the moment and the ADF in general isn't easy to just walk into. They reject people all the time for little things like "not enough life experience", "doesn't have the right priorities", etc, etc. I have friends who got knocked back because they were unemployed for a while which suggested they lacked drive.

If DFR suspected you were joining to avoid homelessness they'd pull the pin pretty quick.

Our armed services do not function like the USA, enlistment is certainly not a done deal. Believing it or not even the most "brain dead" roles are quite competitive. We have under 60K people in our permanent defence force and I guarantee we have way more than that you want in.
