Wasn’t sure which of these to respond to so I just picked one. Also not sure why I’m even engaging with this but here we are. I work in a hospital and I have firsthand experience with this. Finances do not play into medical decisions. Your doctor can’t just pull the plug on you because you can’t pay. There are standards of care and treatment algorithms that need to be followed. Your anecdote is nice, in this case it’s my opinion the father did nothing. Somebody is either brain dead or they are not. They will either recover or they won’t. Barricading yourself in a room and brandishing a weapon against healthcare providers won’t change the outcome.

Weaning life support is not equivalent to pulling the plug. His doctors would’ve been doing him a disservice to keep him on full life support. Mechanical ventilation takes a hell of a toll on your lungs, not to mention muscular atrophy from being in a coma. Everybody is weaned off of life support. The only difference is how they respond.

Also, sometimes people are in comas for ten or twenty years. Don’t you think their health insurance would lapse somewhere in there? Life support cannot be withdrawn because of a lack of ability to pay. Prove me wrong with something other than an anecdote
