The Difference between Bakers and Facebook

When any society gives the opportunity to a group to exploit its resources, that society can rightfully expect something (the product or service) in return. Here's a list of exaggerated examples to show the lunacy of the opposite. Now since you're probably a US right-winger (seeing as you're not fussed with sharing your sexual preferences with us), I've tried to appeal to your sensibilities:

  • Highway operator in Wyoming filters usage of the road, disallowing any vehicle with a plate number indicating they're a veteran from passing through, as a protest to a recent invasion of an oil-rich country. As a result, thousands of financially vulnerable Veterans can't cross state lines; coat hanger sales rise.
  • Every gun manufacturer agrees: Republicans too dangerous to arm; will only be selling guns to Democrats from now on
  • Amidst rising incidence of anti-American violence in Guadalcanal, a joint press release from Fiji Airways, Nauru Airlines, Solomon Airlines, and Virgin Australia informs the world they'll deny anyone carrying a US passport to board their flights, leaving dozens stranded in a hostile environment.
  • Egyptian EMT refuses to drive Mormon patient to the hospital, who dies within minutes; St. Mary's Coptic Hospital releases statement citing the driver acted well within the accepted parameters of "picking who I serve" and "Protestants suck".
  • Lockheed Martin refuses to sell advanced new fighter to US military; donates all units to the International Council for Death To America instead
  • McDonald's introduces new miracle hamburger that allows you to lose weight when you eat it, but they won't be selling it in the US, making it useless

Even amidst my silliness, you can see the power games already at play here. Any sufficiently advanced state will do well to limit any access to this sort of power to corporations, local administrations, groups, NGOs, religions, etc.
