[DISCUSSION] Opinions and thoughts on Mac Miller's new album, GO:OD AM.

Hm. This one's tough. I've been listening to Mac since way back when he was opening for Spitta at the Shadow Lounge so it's always interesting for me when he drops a new project to just make some quick notes on what's what.

What's the Same

Killer Production and Flow- Seems Jerm and E Dan haven't stopped honing their craft. They've been making killer beats for Mac for almost a decade at this point. They know what he sounds best on and this album shows that. He crushes most of the beats and even when he tries something new like on Time Flies he knocks it out of the park. This is probably the area where he's really matured the most overall. Ever since BSP flopped so hard with the critics it seems like he's really dedicated himself to becoming absolutely the best he can be. It's quite evident with how seemingly effortless his flow is on most beats post-Macadelic.

What's Changed

The overall attitude of the album- WMWTSO was pretty out there/bleak, and Faces was the darkest shit I've heard in a minute, GO:OD AM is a step back towards the positive Mac we saw from Jukebox until BSP. Not so much of the impending doom and gloom and death we saw with his last two drops. While it's not KIDS or anything, it's still a ways from Faces.

Subject Matter- He seems to have gravitated more towards the braggadocio swagger rap with regards to content. He's back in the pocket of rapping about weed and money, and while he mentions his "highs and lows" he kind of disregards the Show Don't Tell Rule in favor of talking about other less substantial things. I was hoping for more reflection on the time when he was really struggling with his demons. Instead it feels like we got a bit more "fluff" with less attention paid to the deeper shit. That's not to say that he ignores it altogether. He does get into it with Doors/Weekend/Time Flies. It's also not to knock the "less substantial" shit he raps about because he's got a number of certified bangers with 100 Grandkids/In the Bag/Clubhouse.

Premature Conclusion

I think this is a solid project that combines a bit of all the different eras of Mac. He shows his ass a bit, goes into the troubles of being young and famous, while using his recently refined flow to make a few more bangers than I would've expected. This is all very, very early. I probably won't really know what to make of it for another 2 months or so. It's way too early to label it anything. If anything it's a well balanced album with a good deep cuts:banger ratio. We'll see if that ends up hurting or helping it in the long run.
