Disney’s ‘Little Mermaid’ Backlash Has Reached Insane Heights: "How did we get to the point where grown men are furious about a movie made for 8 year-old girls?"

I think it's two things colliding, one new, one old.

Big studios have always courted controversy by doing things like this - noticing that a minority group is getting positive mainstream attention and then treating that like a lucrative fashion trend to jump on. For a long while now, it's worked gangbusters for them with easily hand-waived social consequences. They get brownie points from a lot of the audience, a few minority creatives do genuinely get some significant benefits, and - bonus! - there's a vocal political minority to drum up publicity and egg members of the political mainstream into buying tickets as a show of support.

I think what's new is the balance has tipped in favor the vocal minority. MAGA Republicans have been very, very successful at shoving themselves into every aspect of the public discourse. They're incredibly overamplified at this point. The studios don't give a fuck about the social consequences - those only affect us plebs - so they're sticking with the plan. To them, this is great! There's lots of opposition from the political minority! Now's the time to lean in, play up the controversy, and make the big bucks! Unfortunately for us plebs, that means overamplifying the MAGA minority yet again, and on and on in a cycle that hopefully isn't endless.
