Does anyone know much about Amway?

Former Amway employee here. I was with Amway for 10 years, starting right at 18 years old -

YES. They drug test… and it’s a hair test. Yep. Hair. It goes back 90 days (3 months). They will send you to a MED1 (typically) in GR and will take a few hairs that have to measure 1.5” in length (0.5” = roughly 30 days of growth). They even test Manpower and other Contract employees! They are also tested by hair.

I worked in manufacturing and then moved into multiple finance roles at the HQ in Ada - I also re-located to Poland for Amway Europe (permanent relocation). Aso a hair test. You will be tested for any injury on campus as well, regardless of your department or job duties. It’s not just for forklift drivers. Cut your fingers with scissors, need stitches? Trip and fall, hit your head? Trip in a warehouse just walking through? Drug test. Even if you work in IT at a computer all day.

They WILL check for Marijuana. No exceptions for recreational. This is because Amway does business outside of Michigan and has multiple facilities around the world (Buena Park CA, Quincy WA, multiple shared service centers in Europe). Businesses that operate on a federal / across state / country lines typically don’t give a shit about a states recreational laws. Most of Amway’s business comes from ABOs / IBOs in Asia.

Also, if you weren’t aware, Amway is a very very conservative company that funnels absurd amounts of money to GOP candidates. They are anti-drug as fuck, love Jesus, etc etc. - another reason they don’t fuck around with weed.

I’ll also add this - Amway is a horribly run company that has no direction. In 2021 they laid off 2,000 Employees with no prior announcement - one third of their entire corporate workforce. Knee jerk, random decision by their shady board of directors. Multiple managers and directors, executive staff have left the company for Bissel, MillerKnoll, Steelcase, Wolverine, and other west michigan big name manufacturing companies.

The only attractive thing about Amway is the mostly generous salary and benefit package… but I can tell you this - your manager will be making double that just to micromanage you and focus on reporting. They’re the ones who get the pat on the back and move up the corporate ladder; despite you being the one who does the work.

I left Amway voluntarily after the layoffs in 2021. Multiple executive level changes, announcements of plant closures that they then back peddled on (after scaring all of their manufacturing employees into thinking they were losing their jobs), essentially practiced ageism by offering VSP severance packages to older tenured employees only to re hire college kids back into those roles so they could pay them less.

Only started including diversity and inclusion initiatives in the last 4-5 years and trust me… you’ll hear a lot of the older employees talking shit about it. Place is filled with a lot of white, rich, yuppie people who do nothing but sit around and micromanage.

Leaving Amway was the best decision I ever made. Only reason I stayed is because of the money and benefits (they paid for my schooling) and for awhile I convinced myself the culture was shifting. It didn’t. It won’t. And MLMs are just fuckin evil.

Do yourself a huge favor and stay far far far away from that place unless you want to give up weed, listen to constant political gossip and worry about losing your job every 3 months because they “re-structure” whenever their board doesn’t fill their pockets with a billion dollars each.

Fuck em.
