Has there ever been a time when you weren't taken seriously for a medical complaint, and it turned out to be something serious? What happened and how do you feel about it?

I had hypothyroidism. When I first started showing symptoms, it was just fatigue and sleepiness. I'd gone from sleeping 5 hours a day to 10 hours a day. I was having charlie horses at least once a week. That and some other symptoms prompted my nurse friend to send me to a doctor and get the tests done for hypothyroidism.

It's a pretty simple test to see whether or not you have hypothyroidism, but my doctor only ran one test (TSH only, I believe. it was several years ago). It didn't show anything was wrong. I was told to take D vitamins and sleep well.

Well, that 10 hours or sleep crept up to 12, crept up to 14, and just kept increasing. I was sleeping constantly. When I wasn't sleeping, I was thinking about sleeping. I was falling asleep at work, got fired for it. I was falling asleep driving, thankfully no accidents. My hair was coming out in clumps. I took to wearing wigs. I wound up losing weight because I'd rather sleep than go through the trouble of making food. So most of the time, I didn't eat.

It was like this for a couple weeks. I eventually went to another doctor about it. She ran every test for hypothyroidism and yep, turns out I have it!

Would have liked to catch it before I got fired.
