As valid of a point that is, let's say Ruby did exactly what Yang suggested and drop the relic in the well. Okay, great, the scene is now more strongly written. Mission accomplished.

But now what? What would the gang do next? There's no point in going to Atlas if they dumped the relic in some random place instead. Should they still go to Argus to meet up with Jaune, Ren, and Nora? What would Ruby and the others tell them? How would they react? And what would they do afterwords? They still wouldn't have a solution yet to defeat Salem, which they could at least attempt to do if they summon Jinn with the lamp and asked one last question. What would they even do once all is said and done? Let's not also forget that Neo and Cinder are now after Ruby and even Salem is now aware that Ozpin is already reincarnated. Whether they drop the well somewhere or still carry it with them, the gang are still going to be targets. And even if Ruby and the others managed to somehow defeat Cinder, Neo, and every other obstacle in their path, never mind for a moment whether Maria would be as likely to learn of Ruby's silver eyes which in turn would compel the latter to be taught how to better use them, there's still Salem, who is immortal.
