I don't think this is recent news. But it is crazy.

It would be nice to see employers offering adequate training or vouchers to do these programs. There’s such high turnover in the food industry I’m not sure how this would work out logistically, but in my experience working as a line cook with these certificates, the knowledge pretty necessary.

I knew a guy who had his Food Safe certificate who tried to tell me it was okay to pick up toast off the floor and serve it to customers. He would also frequently mix cleaning chemicals together in order to cut corners, which lead to one of our staff having a severe asthma attack and landed her in the ER. Other uncertified staff were on oil change duty for the deep fryer, and during the month and a half that I worked there I saw the oil get changed once. It was disgusting. People need to be properly educated somehow.
