Dragonsong (Heavensward Theme) Lyrics

I see and understand where you're coming from, but I just do not agree with them.

But first of all, we are in the Seventh Umbral Era, not the Seventh Astral Era. This is very important. In FFXIV, there is a cycle between Calamity and Prosperity, each marked by an Era. So to start, in the First Umbral Era, there was a large war that angered the 12 Gods and they left Eorzea. It was the First Astral Era that came after, when the Age of Man began. The Fall of Dalamud marked the beginning of the Seventh Umbral Era.

I believe the song is referencing to the history of Eorzea and the cycles which it seems to go through, always. Not Scions turning into Ascians. Also, if it was a cycle, then wouldn't the Ascians turn back into Scions?

Ascians are not "new" by any means. They have existed for quite a long time and are mentioned in legends. Not stories or myths, but legends. They have also, until recently, thought to be immortal, even amongst themselves. If there was a transformation from Light to Dark, wouldn't there have to have been some sort of elimination of one party? These Ascians have been here for a long time and they have been bringing shit and chaos into this world since the beginning. They have even mentioned that Hydaelyn grows weak, even though the people have survived 7 calamities, which they have brought upon Eorzea. This hints at the idea that Hydaelyn never waxed and waned from power. She's just been growing weaker and weaker, despite her successfully aiding the effort in restoring Eorzea.

But enough about the Ascians, lets talk about the song and how to pertains to Eorzea. It is important to look at all the lyrics and not just pick and choose certain lines, and then look at the current scene which is being shown.

First Verse:

"Children of the land do you hear

Echoes of truths that once rang clear

Two souls intertwined

One true love they did find

Bringing land and heavens near"

Whoever is singing, is asking all the inhabitants of Eorzea if they still remember what happened in the past. Two souls fell in love and then something very significant happened. What was it? I'm not 100%, but I'm pretty sure it has something to do with the races of Eorzea living together with the 12 Gods. "Bringing Land and Heavens near" :P This is because in the beginning of Eorzea, the 12 Gods were believed to actually inhabit Eorzea, along with the earliest of races. I believe dragons were one of them, along with others. Dragonsong :D

Second Verse:

"But flames that burn full bright, soon fell dark

Memories dimmed by shadowed hearts

In the waxing gloom did wane the lover's moon

Watching as their worlds drift apart"

The two lovers lost their passion and they fell out of love. Was it actually love they are singing about? Maybe? Let's just say they were related in a way where one affected the other. Whatever this relationship was, it wasn't working out, and the end result was a "calamity". In other words, the First Umbral Era, when the 12 Gods left Eorzea. Also, I want to mention that Astral and Umbral appears very often in FFXIV. The Sun usually refers to Astral, and The Moon usually refers to Umbral. Astral and Umbral could very be the two souls the song is talking about.

Third Verse:

"A passion dwelling within

Sacrifice, a final plea to her kin

Yet this bond of hope, by treachery was broke

Scattering her words to the wind"

So if we're talking metaphorically; Astral is the girl and Umbral is the guy. Knowing that they were falling a part and things were going to shit because of it, Astral did something to make a plea to Umbral. But Umbral pretty much rejected it and whatever Astral did, did not change the outcome. Umbral Era happened, then Astral Era happened, but then Umbral Era came back anyway. The cyling Era's of Eorzea.

Fourth Verse:

"Swelling over long,

seas of blood, are a song

And death an afterthought

To those who fight for naught"

This talks about the cycles of calamities and prosperities in which Eorzea and it's inhabitants seem to go through. Wars are fought, they turn into stories and tales. The people who hear them don't even remember really why people have died for those wars. This makes their deaths in vain.

Fifth Verse:

"A throne, lying empty

A reign, incomplete

Alone, for eternity

A pain, without cease"

BUT! This is after all, Dragonsong. So let's talk about the war between the Dragons of Merycidia and the Allagan Empire! - Xande and his throne (Crystal Tower) - Allagan Empire's vision of ruling over all of the land - Their once powerful empire will never see an equal - Their left behind technology now only seems to bring pain and destruction.

Sixth Verse:

"Children of the land, answer this

Why must you turn to empty bliss

Tell me why break trust, why turn the past to dust

Seeking solace in the abyss"

Singer addresses the inhabitants of Eorzea, why do you always seek to have greater power, even if it means creating war and destruction? Why don't you learn from the past and doom yourselves to make the same mistakes, bringing in another Umbral Era?

Seventh Verse:

"Tell me why create, a circle none can break

Why must you let go, the life you were bestowed

This I fear I'll never know

Never know"

Always forgetting everything you have struggled through to get where you are and make the same mistakes again. Why can't you just be happy with what you have earned and just keep it, instead of throwing it all away for something more. It doesn't make sense.
