The effect of this subreddit

This is a totally valid criticism of the sub. It sucks feeling like your identity isn’t being reaffirmed in a space like this. I want to offer another angle though.

The “I rock lemon bars and cuffed jeans” memes may not necessarily mean to be taken literally as identity affirmations, but cultural symbols.

Lemon bars- this thread is a great example of why lemon bars became a bisexual meme. They aren’t a common dessert so it’s fair to say there’s an obscurity to them. A taste for them, sometimes not understood. This one feels harmless because it’s a dessert, and a great inside “joke”, even if you don’t like them or haven’t had one.

Cuffed jeans- this is just funny to me. A lot of people cuff their jeans. Memes don’t have to make sense, they just have to make you feel like you’re in on the joke.

The real joke to these memes is that we are all so incredibly different from one another that we use simple things like lemon bars and rolled pants to connect with each other. Your validity isn’t based on dessert tastes. Make a meme about bis who don’t like lemon bars. There’s always room for you here.
