US Election Day Megathread 2016

What Now For Australia?

The US is the strongest and the second oldest of our allies. Every war the US has been involved in since WWII had the Aussies along.

But China is our biggest trading partner. If Trump starts a trade war with China, then we're fucked. Proper fucked.

Well be the nut in the jaws of an American/Chinese nutcracker. And that never turns out well for the nut.

We simply can't afford to be forced to choose a side. We need both of them.

China for trade - they buy most of our exports - coal, iron ore, gold, billions in agricultural products and invest billions into the Australian economy. Without the Chinese markets we'd be no more than a quarry, with kangaroos, at the arse end of the planet.

But we need the USA as well. We've been friends since Australia first threw a shrimp on a BBQ. We've fought together, bled together and died together. We've known victory and defeat together. We're fucking brothers. We need our alliance with the USA for our own defence. If that falls apart then we have no option other than to develop our own nukes for our own defence. Is that what the world needs? More nukes? ( Seriously - the world wouldn't like the idea of pissed-up Ozzies with nukes. We get a bit fight after a few beers...)

Our best hope for the next few years is tapdancing between the two of them. Maybe act as honest broker.

But, if push comes to shove then most of us will opt to side with the Yanks. They're family. It might break our economy but you don't abandon family just because they've went a bit crazy. They might get better....
