ELI5: internet.org and why is it bad for India?

I am sure it has been discussed previously, but imma explain it again anyway.

What is internet.org?

Facebook decides to come up with this awesome campaign which will give you free internet (as they advertise it). But the reality is, only some select essential (as they decide) sites will be given to you free of cost (one of which is Facebook itself).

I am not sure about which companies/websites have actually registered to this internet.org (now Freebasics service) but, I am sure this is available ONLY to Reliance users.

So, its not free internet for all, but free internet for only Reliance users.

Why is it bad?

Let me give you the example which has been stated as always. Say Amazon gets onto the internet.org platform and Flipkart chooses not to. Now, an average person without a netpack will use Amazon (because it is free to use and he doesn't need to spend his Data to use it) and flipkart loses its sales.

New startups might actually be able to offer you goods and services at a very cheap price but the service providers who had enough money to get on internet.org will kill these startups as they have a plus point of giving free access to their customers.

The bigger picture is, Facebook is stopping another facebook from being created. Imagine, if Orkut was free to use. Nobody would have bothered getting onto Facebook. And this is exactly what they are doing.

Also, They have Facebook as an essential service. REALLY? Nobody can survive without Facebook? Is it that important?

Nobody here is against the concept of giving free access to non-profit organizations like Wikipedia and all that. Nobody is benefiting or losing from that. But when it comes to Media Corporations, e-Commerce websites and all that, you are pretty much forcing an end user to read/buy at only one place. Well, they are not forcing, but the end user will use the free service than the paid service.

The Concerns

  1. If internet.org really wants to give free essential sites to the end user, why don't they allow it on all carriers and why only on Reliance?
  2. Why are they taking support by force (without knowledge)? I mean, Why would you add a part of the code which automatically assumes that every person who uses the program to have a "digital India"-filtered profile picture supports internet.org which Digital India =! Internet.org?
