The AR-15 has become the Lego of the gun world, the 'let's pretend' codpiece of the inadequate, the totem of the SWAT team fantasist. The AR has become to gun owners what red convertible sportscars are to middle aged men. In the configurations 90 percent of modern AR's tend to be presented with, they are good for two things: an attempt at phallic overcompensation and a rosary with which you pray you get the chance to kick down a door and shoot a person.

Obviously this isn't true of every AR-15, nor is it true of every AR-15 owner. It is true of way too many of them though, and the AR is the de rigeur firearm for the set who thinks Soldier of Fortune magazine is a masturbatory aid.

The fact of the matter is that for the most part, any pistol, centerfire rifle, or shotgun can be used for home defense. Plastic stocks and picatinny rails don't keep you safer than walnut and engraving. The next time you hear someone brag about their "tactical" this or "tactical" that, ask them what their tactics are. They'll look at you dumbfounded. It is all a big game of dress-up with deadly weapons.

If someone is breaking in to your house, the most important thing is not killing that person. It is making sure they don't take your shit or harm your family. Yes, there will be times where you just have to kill that person, but home defense is not yearning for the day when some motherfucker tries something and you get a chance to let loose on the most dangerous game. Home defense is hoping you never find yourself in that situation but being prepared if you do. A double barreled shotgun can accomplish that goal, and it can also blast skeet, dove, quail, ducks, turkeys, geese, etc. You can't do that with your AR.
