I read an article about this a while back. She was a raging narcissist and had stranied relationships with all her children. They talked about one mail exchange that went like this

George: Hi mom, I'm writing to let you know that I won my first battle as a general hope you are proud of me.

Mary: I'm out of butter. Come back home and buy me more butter.

Mary Washington is often praised for molding George into the great leader and revolutionary he needed to be to build the U.S. Without Mary Washington there would be no US but that's only true in a biological sense. As mention above she was a narcissist who did not make him s better man and by all accounts was probably a loyalist herself. However women's groups pushed this false narrative as part of a broader push to assert women's worth and importance and it worked. Most people think Mary Washington was sweet and essential in mentally shaping the father of our country.
