[Georgia] Apartment complex fraudulently placed $888.00 charge on my credit report. [x-post /r/legaladvice]

It is not charging you twice but rather you are equally responsible, though a scummy collector might try it.

Ah, yes, you're right! Assuming the collection agency has us both under the same internal account #, this is probably just one debt. I'll see what they say. Thank you!

You should first call the apartment complex and see what the hell the charge is for.

I called and spoke to the office manager. She hung up on me each of the four times. My phrasing was something like, "Hi, ___, this is PFHelpQ. My boyfriend and I rented apartment 409 last year and now there is an $888 charge on my credit report. Can you tell me what this charge is?" After being hung up on, I figured in writing would protect both parties better anyway, so I sent an email phrased similarly. We used to communicate via email all the time. No replies after two emails sent.

Have what ever the reason or lack there of that the apartment complex comes up with sent in writing.

Nothing from them in writing thus far.

Then you need to send a verification of debt to the collections company and see what proof they have that you owe this.

Great. Thanks.

Do you have a copy of the letter where your security deposit was returned and the sign off from the complex from when you moved out. If not you need to start digging for that and a copy of the lease. Also a copy of your bank statement showing were you deposited your returned security deposit.

I do have some documentation that can help. Unfortunately, six months after the move, I threw a lot of old documents away. Now I know to keep everything for at least a few years in events such as this. Really frustrating!

Thank you so much for your help.
