Getting ma'am'd at the airport until you show them your ID.

I don't enjoy those moments where they struggle to "backtrack". Depending on whether or not I'm comfortable with the setting, I'll tell them I'm open to those pronouns. Which is either followed by extended long looks of confusion and silence or some offensive joke about it.

Once, I held the door for someone at a gas station and they said "thank you young man". I was initially excited but it died down once I realized I was in a rural part of the state, and figured if they realized I was afab, it might be an issue. I waited to pay with my arms across my chest and left quickly. It was an odd moment but one of the firsts where I realized I was interested in exploring what it meant to be myself.

Always an interesting experience to see how folks react
