All very true, except really gun control. Bernie's record doesn't fit neatly into either box for gun legislation. Gun control is an issue on which Republicans are actually more liberal than Democrats, just like trade liberalization. Bernie is left of the Democratic party here, but right of most Republicans.

He voted against the Brady Act. He voted to block funding to any aid organization that tried to registered or taxed Americans' firearms.

He has also made a statement I rather agree with.

if you passed the strongest gun control legislation tomorrow, I don’t think it will have a profound effect on the tragedies we have seen.

That's pretty true. We are so far behind the other developed nations in terms of solving the actual, systemic causes of violence that we aren't really at a point that gun control might make even a reasonable debt in the rate of violent crime. We need to address undereducation, poverty, health care spending, inequality along many vectors - wage, race, gender etc. We need to better provide for our people so that they don't feel a need to turn to violence to get by, a need to turn to crime. Anyone who commits a crime to support themselves is someone we as a society have failed, and someone who will find a way to commit that crime regardless, because they must in order to survive.

He did, over the last 20 years, change his stance on background checks. Initially rejecting the idea of federal background checks on all sales, but now supporting them. This makes sense to me, as the amount of time it takes to preform them declined from days or weeks to seconds, so it no longer unnecessarily burdens law abiding Americans etc etc.
