Hoover "Hunger Map of Europe" (1918) [864x594], from Six Thousand Years of Bread by H.E. Jacob

Have you ever heard of the term "Western Betrayal"? It's quite popular here. Think about like this: in varying degrees of, Poland, Czechslovakia, the Baltics, most of central Europe in general, was democratic. The war started in defense of Poland and others. But at Yalta, and Tehran, and Potsdam, Roosevelt especially did not oppose Stalin's plans to bring these countries under Soviet influence. I doubt that he was so naive to beleive Stalin's promise on "free and democratic elections." Even Churchill stood up somewhat, wanting to give Poland Lviv, but that didn't work. Beautiful cities in these countries were razed and uglified with Soviet modernist buildings that were and are gray and bland. Look at Warsaw. The Warsaw Uprising probably would have succeeded had Soviet forces allowed Western forces to use the airfields on the other side of the Vistula. Instead, the Soviets blocked help, and Warsaw was razed; historical palaces burned, libraries ransacked. Prague, and Czechslovakia, were one of the most advanced and beautiful nations in Europe before the war. No one batted an eyelash at the invasion of the Baltics or the failed attemot at Finland. Moldova was taken from Romania. I could go on. So no, I don't recommend that the U.S. should have gone to war; that's truly idiotic. But Roosevelt should have pushed for the freedom of the countries they originally fought for. Yeah, the U.S. entered later, but the U.K. And France fought for them. It was the West's fault that these countries couldn't accept the Marshall Plan, even though most wanted to. These people were thrown into 40 years of communism, and many still have to rebuild. All because Roosevelt was scared of Stalin and Churchill wasn't strong enough.
