How bad is it actually for black people.

White person who lives near Elver park in a predominately black neighborhood here. I get that you've asked for non-white people perspective but I thought I'd share something my neighbors said a couple years ago.

They were talking about the fireworks display at Elver Park, it had just been cancelled forever. The justification was that it cost the city too much to police the event + the cost of the actual fireworks.

This event was attended by THOUSANDS of people, had a corporate sponsor - everything... it was great. But when it came to the city trying to save money and making a choice about which events they can help provide police support to, this was one event that was named as needing to be cut.

I think what is most frustrating about this is that it took place in an area of town that is predominately black. Those attending the event itself were about 60% black // 40% white.

The event didn't have very many issues either. The last two years I went the problems happened over an hour AFTER the fireworks ended. So the real solution could have been that after fireworks the park must be emptied. Instead, the event was shuttered. It was chalked up to a casualty of the budget. But it's funny how the event that has 90% white attendance was relocated and saved.
