How exactly can I start a career in this field?

Well it depends. So you want to go back to school and pursue a degree or teach yourself? Generally jobs are looking for people with an actual degree (or a relevant degree) in the field. They will choose the person with the degree over a "self taught" person any day unless your work is beyond amazing. If you want to self teach yourself, you need to understand the basics. Do you know the fundamentals of design? Do you know what the golden ration is? Do you know about hierarchy? Do you know about font legibility, what's CMYK vs RGB?, what's serif vs sans serif? If not, then you need to watch videos or do tons of research on the basics before you even touch the applications. This will give a good basis since jobs might ask you these questions and it will help you in the long run to not look dumb when saying you're a graphic designer.
