How should schools handle student suicide in regards to the other students at the school?

It's hard to say. They went all out with the first student. He was a very popular student and I think his suicide affected the entire school. They had an assembly, an after school memorial, and permitted students to attend his funeral and miss class. He has his jersey hung up in the boys locker room. No one knows why he did what he did.

The second suicide happened a couple months after. The suicides aren't believe to be connected. This was of a less popular student in a different grade. He did well in school but didn't have a lot of friends and was not well known. They had an assembly and after school memorial. His parents asked that no students from the school attend his funeral. A lot of the students suspect that the pressure from his parents got to him but nothing has been confirmed.

The third student was about a year after the second one. Again, the school says the suicides weren't connected. This one was a female student. She was popular but not well liked from what my kids say. There was a memorial and assembly. Her parents also asked for privacy and only wanted her close friends at the funeral.

This most recent suicide came out of nowhere and no one understand why.

Grief counselors were made available in each suicide case and health teachers were encouraged to spend more time discussing mental health. After the 3rd suicide parents were concerned that the school was spending too much time highlighting these suicides and causing more kids to consider it as an option. It's a good school and my kids and their friends appear to be happy but I think there needs to be an entire culture change.
