Some (most) university Greek organizations do a huge amount of community service. It's more a measuring stick by which they compete rather than "PR". Really nice fraternities have a reputation to uphold because alumni expect it, and because in certain fields (business, law), frats are used for networking/recruiting.
this is the complete bullshit that you convince yourselves of.
I wrote wall of text response and lost it somehow. suffice to say that I know of many cases of:
homophobia (including one situation where I know the details)
domestic abuse(including another situation where I know the details
manipulative and coercive behavior/relationships (same situation I just refered to, the guy became shorthand at his frat for getting with two chicks at once, even though he was abusing his gf while she lived at the frat and started abusing the other girl too)
all of which were enabled promoted etc by the frats in question. most of these happened at my school but I know of several incidents at others as well. We are not a frat oriented school a very low percentage is in frats, and thus there are very few normal people that just happen to be in frats....they are an insular community, they view themselves as under siege by the community, they have a victim and a superiority complex (on a personal and institutional level) and they treat everyone like shit who doesnt suck up to them (which is almost everyone because we have a particularly strong egalitarian streak in the student body at large.
The greek community bands together to defend almost anyone accused of wrongdoing by the school or the school community, facebook etc light up with their defensive bullshit.
I think the rape culture rhetoric we are experiencing these days is problematic and I dont see eye to eye with Take Back The Night on alot of things and I resent many of their posters, statements etc.....but GREEK culture and institutions are as bad enough to legitimize much of the accusations made about college life and culture. You scum are making the rest of us look bad.
sure sometimes the frats get attacked and or shut down for shit that wasnt really their fault or was simply in bad taste....im not trying to say they dont get judged unfairly in specific situations.
but in general they are 1000x worse than jumped up indoctrinated popularity contest douchepawns like you pretend....seriously we dont need your biased opinion, we know what kind of people you are, simply by observing the difference between your memberships and the general collegiate public.
I know a handful of greek life peeps who are decent people, but I was wrong about several others that I used to make exceptions for, and I got to watch a number of nice young freshmen turn into the worst pieces of shit as their sisters/brothers taught them to act like they have some special status.....because they force their members to do tons of community service to desperately justify their existence.
Shut them all down and any other group that segregates.
It worked REALLY WELL for the colleges that I am familiar with that got rid of their frats.
Middlebury college.....its got coed social houses now that replaced the frats and create community spaces that serve the student body at large. They even still have one Frat because they were the founding chapter of that national frat, but their chapter is Coed now and they even forced the national organization to recognize them because they are the founding chapter.
just a few hours away is Dartmouth. I dont think I have to tell you about Dartmouth frats, if you are extra ignant then fucking look it up.
anyway, go fuck yourself and tell all of your brothers they can go fuck themselves too
