I'm young, physically fit, and capable of work but I can't get a job to save my life. What do I do?

Alright OP no offence but you obviously have no idea how to job hunt. Luckily I do so shut up, buckle down and listen.

Those job application sites that you bookmarked? You can go ahead and delete them, if the job market is as competitive as you make it out to be then that's where everyone else is and you're competing with all of them -- and you're losing.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if you've been living unemployed for two years then I'm assuming you're living rent free with your parents. If so, you can afford to do it my way:

Figure out what you're good at. Are you good at chatting up customers, or do you suck at that? Do you handle a fast-paced environment well, or do you need to take your time? You get it.

Now figure out where you want to work (regardless of whether they are advertising work or not), make a resume that would appeal to an employer at that place, and go talk to a manager. Do not leave a resume with the person at the front, I almost guarantee you it's going straight in the trash. Ask for the manager and if they aren't in, ask when they will be or ask for their phone number or email address. Contact them directly, leave an impression. Dazzle them, woo them, make them wish they had an opening for you.

CALL THEM. For fucks sake stop sitting beside your phone wondering why it won't ring. It won't ring because they don't know how badly you want to work for them. SHOW THEM. Pick up the phone, say "I was wondering, if there's a position opening up I'd love to swing by for an interview". If there isn't, tell them you'll call back May 1 and then do that. It shows responsibility, follow-through, and assertiveness. Some people here are saying to follow up every day. Don't do that, that's a great way for the front staff to suddenly start telling you "she's on vacation" or "she's at the other location".

Do this for a bunch of companies, and they'll either have someone quit and you'll be the first person they think of, or they'll make room for you. Instead of asking, "Why won't they give me a chance?" you need to ask yourself "Why SHOULD they give me a chance?" You might have a great work ethic, you might be really smart and really strong, but they don't know that and they don't have the time to invite every single applicant in to show their brains and their brawn.

This is how I have gotten every single one of my jobs, living in a city where I have no connections and during a low hiring volume time no less.

Also, you might want to get an old employer or someone you trust to have a look at your resume; throughout my years I've been handed a lot of resumes and exactly one looked good. The rest were god-awful.
