The importance of practical effects to me and why it should be for you

This criticism of CGI is one you hear a lot and while u/82364 make a good point about the ability to spot computer generated effects, I would contend that even the obvious CGI, when used effectively, can be superior to practical effects and its use can is anything but lazy. The post criticizes the rise in CGI across all mediums but almost all of the examples given in the original post deal with scenes that are intended "gritty' and "real," in those situations obviously computer generated effects clash with the intended ascetic and as a result make for poor film making. However there are cases where "fake" looking CGI perfectly complement the intended ascetic, improving the quality of the film.

My best example is "Journey to the West," a 2013 action comedy, directed by Stephen Chow. It is based off the ancient Chinese novel of the same name which is also the inspiration of countless children's stories. The film opens with an obviously CGI shot tracking down into a fantasy fishing village where this scene takes place. All of the elements of this scene work together to produce a fun and ridiculous atmosphere. The obviously CGI monster tells us that what we are watching is pure fantasy and not something to be seriously feared; no children will have nightmares of that fish. Later in the film we get this action sequence where a demon hunter battles with the ghosts of travelers murdered in a inn. There are horror elements that build in this scene before the clip but the obviously fake deformations of the face paired with the cute squeak sound effect combine to remind the viewer that the horror was all in good fun and that it is all a story.

Hard opinions on ascetic styles and choices, such as the use of CGI, are rarely productive when considering film or any for of art. Rather than "hate" a certain mechanic it is always more productive to try to find what it is about a specif usage of that mechanic that diminishes from the work.

Also as an aside: I highly recommend everyone check out "Journey to the West," while it is an unrepentantly exuberant comedy it has real heart and packs an emotional punch. There is a reason it received a positive review from 93% of critics on Rotten Tomatoes.
