My step-mum is Indian. She wanted to bring my father and I back to India to see her home country. Initially I was very excited for this until one of her Indian friends started talking about how he'd take care of me if anything happened to my mum and dad while we were all there. We thought take care of me meant helping me talk to a lawyer (to settle mum's affairs) and making sure I got safely on a plane back to America.

It did not. He started explaining how he'd keep me safe forever, make sure I wore appropriate clothing so that other men wouldn't look at me (he wants me to wear a burqa so my red hair doesn't draw attention), how he didn't mind I had had other men before him and how I still have time to have children for him. He basically explained and fetishized how he'd keep me as an exotic American breeding slave to my parents. (To my horror, my step-mum thought this was very kind of him at first, as he's wealthy and she's very concerned about me 'being taken care of' after they die. We have had some issues explaining how female autonomy actually works outside of India to her.)

We are no longer going anywhere near India.
