Inherited $280K, and live in a LCOL area. Should I buy a ~$150-170K house now, or put that money into investment instead?

be sure to remember buying houses have lots of expenses!

my personal suggestion would be to buy a 120k house or less. then invest the other 160k to cover un expected housing costs/repairs.

this would be a extremely safe position as i feel a person needs to sleep somewhere so never take any risks when buying a home. but some people have the opinnion that they should take risks with their house which can be super profitable. but then look at the number of people who took risks and lost their house in 2008 :(

tl:dr; do not buy too big of a house your income is very low and probably covering the maintenance on a 200k house will get expensive quickly. could you afford a 15k new roof?
