Jamie Oliver accused of cultural 'appropriation' by minister after he launches jerk rice

The term "appropriation" to me, strikes of wanting to deny a culture or wash over it in some way. I really don't think Oliver is doing anything other than embracing a technique/flavour, even if he's doing it "wrong".

It's because you're looking at it from the outside.

Cultures AREN'T for you to pick out and use as decoration. In the US there are many many shysters who pick out bits of Native American culture and use is as decoration or pretend to be one of them.

The difference is Jamie Oliver hasn't spent 150 years murdering Jamaicans.

America in contrast spent nearly two centuries conducting what would be called genocide today.

Jamaica, as you may know, still exists, it's culture still exists and it isn't on the verge of extinction. Oliver isn't appropriating anything, he's a Chef who's released a product based on another product.

Would you call it appropriation if he released a recipe for a Salmon and Shrimp Quiche? It's a staple in France. Is it appropriation if I decide to make a Katsu Curry for dinner?
