Japan to pay travel costs for nuclear attack ‘storytellers’: The Japanese government will fund from April the travel costs of storytellers, both within Japan and abroad, who will share the testimonies given by ageing victims of America’s nuclear attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

The Japanese had already tried to surrender, but the US wouldn't accept anything but unconditional surrender. There was no need to invade, Japan was already on its knees. There was no need for the nuclear attacks, at least if we are to believe the US military high command.

It's been a while since I read up on this stuff, and I don't have time to find sources for you, but that is the jist of it. I don't deny that Japan did some horrible things, but that doesn't really justify dropping nuclear warheads on cities.

In any case, assuming the message they want to convey is similar to the museum in Hiroshima, the point is that nuclear weapons are really, really awful and it would sure be nice if no one used them again.
