Job titles

Job title takes the back seat to pay/benefits.

I am very new in the company I work for (fortune 500), and I started in a staff position. I was recently promoted to a revenue specialist job, and the person who held the job before me was a "senior accountant." In our company, that title apparently means something in terms of career advancement for staff accountants.

Because I'm so new, it would have ruffled some feathers with the staff who have been there for years who haven't hit the "senior accountant" job title, and I'm not here to make waves. So they gave me the money I wanted, the PTO I wanted, and I signed on the dotted line.

To the rest of the staff, I'm one of the crew. But according to my paystubs, I'm a senior. We decided to go this route to not create politics with the rest of the staff.

Anyway, that's my experience. Your mileage may differ. I don't know what job title means in your organization - in ours it's just a dog and pony show.
