Seriously, the guy wasn’t as bad as people think he was. There’s a lot of misinformation about him. For 1, he didn’t subject natives to amputation. He subjected his own people to it but that was legally, and socially acceptable in Europe at the time. If the crime was deemed severe enough. Also, he wasn’t recalled as governor for abusing his subjects, he was recalled for not producing enough gold. And finally, he didn’t sell girls into sex slavery, there’s no evidence of that. The closest things are accounts account of him punishing settlers for doing this. The punishment being amputation. Natives WERE mistreated, under other governors such as Fransisco de Bobadilla. But everything Columbus did was accepted at his time. The worst thing he did was force both natives and settlers into forced labour, which again, wasn’t seen as a necessarily bad thing in the late 15th century.
