The last few days in a nutshell

The first problem is Valve/Bethesda just springing this on everyone without any warning or feedback, and apparently expecting everyone to instantly be thrilled.

Always a problem, but it's a bandaid rip-off technique that I think worked better for them IMHO. Wouldn't have changed the outrage at all and it doesn't look like they're looking for opinions on what to change anyway unfortunately. So it wouldn't have made much of a difference from my perspective.

dependencies and load order requirements, mods might not work together or might stop working, etc.

This has always been an issue for modding and would be an issue for buying mods period; I think mods being bought isn't bad in itself but the fact that valve is doing it first opens the gateway to the hell of all these small problems like this and:

big awesome mods depend on other mods and sometimes include piece of other mods

Yeaaaaah, that's QC issues and copyright issues, no?

his particular incident could have been more easily solved by the community being given some time to prepare for this,

AH! I get it now.

that they willingly hosted for free before

They still do. People don't have to charge, right? Or did I miss that and that's why everyone was pissed. Are people forced to put a pricepoint on steam-mods?

Zenimax/Bethesda have already gotten their share from the sale price of the game. They don't have a right to profit directly off of other people's work, and especially not when they take the vast majority of the profit.

Totally in agreement. Again, I think that's more on Bethseda/Zenimax than Steam, but I'd expect steam to take their usual piece of the pie... I agree, I'm not sure why the OG company gets any piece at all.

There's just a lot of stuff that people are yelling about and I think it's the wrong things at the wrong people and not looking at it all in the right way.

Things that make sense to be mad about: At game companies (beth/Zeni) for modders only getting 25% and companies getting a second piece of someone else's pie for doing 0 work. Modders taking other people's work and getting paid for things they didn't do. Valve for not introducing this more gradually.

Instead this is all pointed at valve and people are mad at valve for "ruining mods forever" and "valve charging for mods now". Hyperbole isn't helping the situation and people are freaking out over inaccuracies.
