Living Far From Your Institution

Some tips if you do the commute:

Podcasts! Once or twice I recorded my study guide as a voice memo and listened on way to my big final, but I mostly let my drive be an enjoyable time. I was about to be in or just coming from class for 2 hours and 40 minutes.. give that noggin a break.

Reliable car!! I hit a deer coming home one night from class (ironically I was switching podcasts and looked at my phone - so my other tip is queue up multiple episodes BEFORE leaving campus). I had to replace it quickly and luckily had the ability to, but it was extra stressful knowing not having a vehicle would affect school too.

Make a friend or two!! Obviously this is just good life advice, but also there will be times when you cannot come to class. You live a ways away and things happen. Have someone who can Zoom you in (depends on professor but prior to Covid many has no problem letting another student turn their webcam on and let me attend class that way) or keep you updated if you miss something. I also had a couple of friends who did a 1.5hr commute to commiserate with or gauge whether they’d attend some optional event or in certain weather conditions.

The best advice is to just remember it’s not forever. You’re working towards an end goal of graduation. The commute can keep you on schedule to meet that goal, or completely obliterate your spirits. I focused on the goal each drive so I stayed on track (tho I totally missed a couple of class days because I just didn’t feel like going - oops).
