Do you put “Dr.” in your email signature?

I never said it wasn’t a misconception! It doesn’t matter if it’s a misconception or not, because people outside of academia will believe what they believe. If you go around calling yourself doctor in non-academic settings then most people will assume you mean medical doctor, they will be confused if you contradict that, and they will be distrustful towards academics moving forwards.

That’s why I said OP should refrain from Dr if they expect to be emailing non-academics, outside of the university setting. If they’re only going to be speaking to people who know about academic titles then it won’t be an issue, but if you’re public-facing, it’s such a bad idea to lean on Dr.
