Looking back at your life today, which seemingly minor life event probably steered you towards a path that shaped who you are today?

I tripped over a Christmas Tree.

I totally threw my back out and ended up in hospital in January, during one of my final exams. My college let me re-sit it penalty free, but not until the following August. Because it had been such a long time between the class and the exam, I had LOADS of studying to do, so I was using my local library all summer as it was quieter than my house. One day when I was just totally sick of studying, I stared out the window and saw that the local wine shop had a staff wantes sign up. I procrastinated by drawing up a CV and cover letter and handing it in, all just to avoid study. I didn't really want a part time shop job. My college boyfriend and I had just broken up and I was dead set on being single and fabulous and having an amazing career as a scientific researcher.

However, the importers that ran the shop called me a few weeks after that and offered me a totally different job in a totally different area/location. I accepted because I was fresh out of college and needed a job, but I hadn't really any plan to be in the wine industry. I went in on the first day to meet a man called James who was going to train me in, the whole time thinking that it was just gonna help pay my bills until I found something more suitable.

It's been just over two years now. I've been promoted three times, the company is funding my MBA, I'm on a totally different career path to what I planned but I LOVE it, and James and I will celebrate our second anniversary in the new year.
