I can sympathize and I'm sorry for his loss. :( My two cats were living with my ex-husband in a particularly bad neighbourhood in Regina, Saskatchewan last year when a neighbouring house known to be involved in drugs and prostitution was set on fire in apparent arson. The fire spread to my ex's house, killing his roommates dog and our two cats. Water was pumped into the house, he was able to get in about 14 hours after the fire to find the two cats either suffocated or drown in the basement. The dog was closer to the fire and apparently there wasn't much left of him.
Here's a picture I took. My ex's house is on the right, the house that was firebombed is on the left. The damage doesn't seem severe from here but inside was totally destroyed and burnt out. You can see where it says the police were investigating the fire, but nothing ever came of it.

I flew in after to pick up there ashes and went to the house with my ex. Something truly weird that happened was that we found outside on the steps, having blown out of the windows of the upstairs, was (a) a love letter written to me from him in 2001 and (b) the original copy of our divorce petition.

I wish I had known when I drove out to start a new life in another province in 2013 that that would have been the last time I saw them again. I would have spent more time with them before I had left. Life is more fragile than you realize, especially when you're pretty young.
It still kills me to think about how the animals died -- how scared they must have been, how they didn't know what was going on, and how it didn't need to happen. I don't even know what to make of it. I don't hate drugs, I don't hate prostitutes, I don't hate criminals, I just hope that one day we advance to a point in society where we don't think it's necessary to burn someone else's house down.
