Mississippi governor signs bill retiring last state flag with Confederate battle emblem

That’s the thing - during his 2019 campaign for governor of Mississippi, Tate Reeves won a lot of votes because of his stance regarding the state flag:

“The people of Mississippi overwhelmingly voted to keep our flag in 2001...I oppose unilateral action by the governor or the Legislature or any other backroom deal by politicians in Jackson to change it. If Mississippians ever decide we should change our flag, and at some point they might, it should only be done by a vote of the people."

I don’t have a problem with the decision to change the flag. But I think a lot of Mississippians wanted and expected an opportunity to vote on whether the flag should stay or go, especially with Reeves as governor. When that opportunity was abandoned altogether, I’m sure many felt misled, betrayed, and silenced by mob rule.
