Is my Landlord going to scam me?

My landlord is kind of a dick. Twice he has let a leak go from being just a leak, to a full blown ceiling cave in; despite me pestering him via text (some of which I have record of). He constantly started mentioning my cats, despite allowing them with a deposit on the lease, and my girlfriend's dogs, who are here sometimes. Anyway, recently the AC started acting up (freezing over constantly and the fan would stay on even when it was off) and I notified the maintenance man, who stated he would "come check it out." When I got home the unit appeared cleaned, a new black metal cable is also now present on the coils inside the unit. When I opened the running unit however, it was still frozen solid inside. Next, I tried to to turn it off and the main panel did not respond at all. The On/off, mode, temperature, and other buttons completely unresponsive and the LED panel is dead. I texted the maintenance man and have the text record. He stated that the unit was "full of pet hair," and that this is the most obvious cause of the malfunction. He went on to say that the landlord "will be very upset about this, as it is a brand new unit." I stated in response that the most likely cause of the damage, seemed to be that maintenance that was performed immediately prior to the malfunction... This landlord is notorious for not returning security deposits, and charged me $600 when my girlfriend hit a natural gas line, while parking off to the side of the driveway. (The piping, as you may suspect from the fact that this was even possible, is quite suspect and was also responsible for the leak that caved in my kitchen ceiling); He was upset that when aforementioned gas leak occured, I called the energy company to shut off the gas, and they in turn required the repair to be inspected). TL:DR; Landlord may try to make me pay for AC that hasn't worked since maintenance man did maintenance on it yesterday. I have text record of said maintenance occurring, should I be worried?
