So my own personal nightmare came true [long].

They couldn't, and they won't try.

You're only partially right; these state restrictions are written by the groups that did seek to overturn RvW, and they're distributed nationwide to Republicans who will sponsor them in their state and push them through legislature. That's how the waiting period bills, the TRAP laws, the heartbeat bills, the "appointing legal council to the unborn child" bills (see: Alabama), and others like the 20 week cap have eroded women's rights. Their plan going forward is to continue with that strategy - of making abortion unavailable completely, instead of trying to overturn the SC ruling. And it's working, unfortunately.

I understand where you're coming from; but you're hearing "it's more important to vote on the economy" because that's what they want you to hear. Alabama is facing a budget crisis, and so this week the legislature (Supermajority Republican) went into special session to try to address it; at least, that's what they said they were doing. The first thing they did - literally, on Monday - was introduce two anti-abortion bills that have nothing to do with budget. The second thing, Tuesday, was introduce a bill to gut the state's already meager education budget.

Now, on an issue like gay marriage, the Supreme Court has already ruled; however, what you will see going forward is that those candidates who are against 'gay marriage' are using that stance to discriminate against others for the same reasons, in different ways (see the "Religious Liberty" laws that allow business owners to refuse service to gay couples). And they can and will do this, because the SC hasn't ruled on it, so when you vote someone in who is anti-gay, they may not sponsor the legislation but they will support it, and they'll advocate FOR it using taxpayer money and their position as an elected leader.

I could go on all day. I used to be just like a lot of y'all - I didn't like politics. It was too "backwards", too "confusing", "no one had it right"; and then I saw what the Republicans did, via Susan G Komen Foundation, to Planned Parenthood. Once my eyes were open, I couldn't feign apathy anymore. I'm a clinic escort now, and the number of women I see that are in situations like yours breaks my heart literally daily. And we stay here because of folks who don't vote, or who vote against their own best interests... It's heartbreaking.

You are going to feel at first like everyone is lying to you. And sometimes they are. But right now there exists two political parties and one is regressive (the other is stagnant - a different issue). The USA is a first-past-the-post voting system; it will always come down to two parties, that is just a mathematical and sociological fact, until the system itself changes.

Consider checking out the big differences between legislation supported by Democrats vs Republicans. Look behind the headlines into the substance. It'll help as a bullshit filter (the Atlantic does a lot of great articles about current events as related to politics).

Regardless, I hope you are healing well. Many good wishes.
